Garden Planting Party

Tonight from 6:00-7:00 is our annual Garden Planting Party! The planting party is hosted by the Garden Club but all community members are invited! At the party we will be moving our indoor plants into the gardens, and planting new seeds. There will also be light snacks, and a rock painting station (bring your own rock!).

If you come you should bring:

- gardening tools (if you have any)

Lots of Outdoor Learning This Week!

With the exception of Tuesday, it was a beautiful week for outdoor learning!

Science

The Grade 3 students were busy collecting, and making observations about different soil samples this week. They are learning about the different types, and layers of soil, as well as the composition of soil (what living and non-living things can we find in soil?)

First we collected soil samples from around the school yard. Then we put the samples into mason jars.
We filled the jars with water, and let the soil settle into layers over 24 hours.
We made observations.

The Grade Two students have been experimenting with air and water. On Wednesday we crumpled a piece of paper and put it into the top of a glass. We put the glass into water and observed the air bubble that kept the paper dry. This was a really fun experiment!

First we made predictions. Many students believe the paper would get wet!
The test...paper stayed dry because of the "air bubble"
We learned that air does take up space!

Math

We are learning all about 3D Solids. Today we went for a neighborhood walk to find examples of 3D solids. We found tons!

Finding 3D solids in the community.

Literacy

Thursday was "Outdoor Learning Day" and we celebrated with a story walk! The students seemed to enjoy reading the story outside. After the story finished we noticed birds near the nesting boxes and so we sat very quietly and watched. We were lucky enough to see male and female tree swallows! We later confirmed our identifications using resources (The Peterson Field Guide to Birds) in the classroom.

After working together to earn ten class points the students chose to spend their special time playing a variety of tag games! The sun was hot, the students were running...and it was a bit muddy in places!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

May 14th Update

Drama Presentation

This Wednesday (May 16th) parents are invited to the Learning Commons from 11:20-12:20 to watch the plays that students have been working on. A note with additional details was sent home today. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Math

In math we are learning all about geometry! Last week we learned about 2D shapes, and this week we will explore 3D solids. We will continue this learning for the next couple of weeks before learning about probability next month.

BBQ Basket

Each class will make a big gift basket that will be auctioned off at Hansen Palooza. Our theme is BBQ! A note was sent home last week outlining the details. If you are able to, please send in items that could be put into our basket. If you wish to contribute but do not want to send in items we are also accepting cash donations that will go towards purchasing a larger item for the basket. If you have any questions please contact me.

Writing

Students are working on publishing their non-fiction books! We look forward  to sharing them with families when they are completed.

Science

We dove into our final science unit today! Grade Two students are learning all about air and water, and the characteristics of animals. Grade Three students are learning all about plants and soil. I have encouraged Grade Three students to bring in a soil sample in a ziploc bag this week.
