Pioneer Day!

On Friday, February 10th we will transform our classroom into a one-room school house! Students are really looking forward to this day. Today a note was sent home explaining this special day. Please let me know if you have any questions.

During a discussion today the novels "Little House on the Prairie" came up. Some students may be interested in borrowing these books from the library to continue reading about what life was like in the pioneer days. The books look like this:

    New Winter Electives Date!

The new Winter Elective date for Primary Students is on Monday, February 6th, 2017.

We will need about 15 parent volunteers to help with supervision. Since the date changed we are not assuming that parents who agreed to volunteer for the original date are automatically available for February 6th. We are asking that parents who are able to volunteer please email Mrs. Gibbs even if they have already agreed to previously. Parents will not be supervising a set group of students. Instead, parents will be supervising a set station alongside school staff, as our students rotate through.  If you are able to assist on Monday, February 6th please email Mrs. Gibbs at heidi.sunnerton@yrdsb.ca.  Please note that since volunteers will be working with groups of students, they must have a Vulnerable Sector Check completed through the York Region Police well in advance of the trip.  A Vulnerable Sector Check form can be picked up from our school’s office.

    Classroom Promise Updated

There have been many conflicts between students lately. Today we had a community circle and discussed some of the things that have been happening. We talked about how we can make our classroom a happier place. One of the ideas was to rewrite our Classroom Promise.

    Math Update

This week we learned about probability! In grade three students are are learning how to predict and investigate the frequency of a specific outcome in a simple probability experiment.

We have been using spinners to play games that involve simple probability experiments. Here are some big ideas that we have been exploring:

    If we spin this spinner...
We have a 1/8 chance of landing on red, a 2/8 chance of landing on yellow, a 2/8 chance of landing on blue, and a 3/8 chance of landing on green.
It is most likely that we will land on green.
It is equally likely that we will land on yellow and blue
It is unlikely that we will land on red
It is impossible that we will land on purple.

If you were playing a game which colour would you like to earn a point for landing on?
How could you make a "fair game" using this spinner?
What would make an "unfair" game with this spinner?

We will have a short Show What You Know about probability on Monday afternoon. Students brought home a homework page to complete over the weekend. The homework is due on Monday.

Here is a link to a website that has some good probability games for extra practise. *Some of the games on this link do not work though*
