June Learning Update

If you would like to discuss your child's progress this year before the last day of school, please let me know. I am available to meet in person, or talk on the phone most days before or after school.

We will have a class picnic next week and families are welcome to join. I will check the weather report to determine the best day.

Reading

It is important for students to continue reading as much as possible throughout the summer (everyday is best!). There is an opportunity for students to borrow books from our school library over the summer. If you would like to know more about this, please let me know before Friday as there is a form that needs to be filled in.

Writing

Students have been finishing off the year by researching about a plant, or animal that they are interested in learning more about. This week they are finishing up their research, and creating a brochure to share their knowledge.

Math

After learning about probability through games and probability experiments, students completed a data management project where they asked a meaningful survey question, collected data, and then interpreted the results. For the rest of the year we will consolidate our skills through math games, puzzles, and problems. Many students have been enjoying the game "Blockus". In this game students must flip, slide, and turn different shapes. This is a great game to grab if you ever see it at a garage sale!

Science

Students have enjoyed learning about plants and animals. We have been discussing different adaptations (physical and behavioral) that plants and animals evolved to have so that they can survive. We have also been discussing how plants and animals affect humans (positive, and negative).

The Wild Robot

You may have heard about Roz and her adventures. We recently finished the first book, and since it ended in such a cliff hanger we had to start the second one (The Wild Robot Escapes). I am hoping that we will be able to finish it before the last day of school! Published in 2016, this is the first time I have read this chapter book to a class and almost everyone seems to love it.
