February 15th Update
Math
We have been learning about estimating and measuring the mass of different objects in the classroom. We also compared, and ordered objects based on their masses. We found the mass of different objects using non-standard units (like snap cubes or counters), and standard units (grams and kilograms). From there we began learning about balancing equations (algebra). We learned that the equal sign = represents balance. Here are some pictures that show a little snapshot of the algebra that we have been exploring:
Next week we will spend some time learning about capacity and on Thursday, February 21st we will have a test so students can show their learning about these topics. Today a study package went home.
Science
In science, the Grade 3s have been learning about strong and stable structures. We are noticing different animal made, and human made structures in our community. We conducted an experiment to determine if a square, or a triangle is a stronger shape. Here is a snapshot of our recent learning in science.

The Grade 2s are exploring the properties of liquids. They are working on making detailed observations, and conducting experiments safely. Here are some pictures:
Writing
We are learning to write lab reports like real scientists! To begin, we conducted an experiment as a class. The experiment began with a question: What happens if we mix dawn dish soap, water, and glycerin? Like true scientists, students wrote a 5 part lab report before, during, and after the experiment. Here are some pictures of the experiment:
Character Building
For the past couple of weeks we have been talking about overcoming challenges, what to do when you have a problem, and how to practise gratitude.
Homework
Next week we have a math test, and it is a short week. We will not having spelling, or math homework next week. We will get back into our routine the following week with brand new spelling homework, and math homework continued on Wednesdays due Fridays.
Winter Carnaval
Next week is Winter Carnaval Week! There are some exciting activities planned for each day. Please see our February calendar for details. Next Friday, February 22nd is Winter Carnaval all day! Students will need to be dressed warmly as they will be outside a lot!

VORC Trip Update- Grade 2s
Our field trip to Vivian Outdoor Recreation Centre was cancelled today due to the inclement weather. We are hoping that it will be rescheduled. Please stay tuned for more information.
Math Update
We have been learning about measuring mass this week. Our learning in this topic began with using words like heavy, heaviest, heavier, light, lightest, lighter to compare various objects in the classroom. We have also been putting objects in order from heaviest to lightest, and lightest to heaviest.
Next we learned about using the pan balances to find the mass of classroom objects.
At first, we used snap cubes as our non-standard unit. Students found that a pair of scissors has a mass of about 6 snap cubes. Today we learned about grams as a standard unit for measuring mass. We learned that a paperclip has the mass of 1 gram. Students used the pan balances, weights, and non-standard units to measure the mass of classroom objects today. We will continue to estimate and measure mass tomorrow, and Friday.

Spelling Words This Week
Spelling
Special Spelling Work for the
week of February 3rd
In school, and in
life children and adults face challenges. These challenges are sometimes called
obstacles, hurdles, or problems. They can happen to anyone, anytime. Sometimes
people get sad, upset, or angry when they face a challenge and this is normal.
This week we are
going to spend some time in class talking about challenges and what we can do
to overcome them. We are going to learn about some strategies that will help us
when we face an obstacle.
Spelling Words:
Perseverance (keep trying and don’t give up!)
Optimism (positive thinking “I can do this”)
Growth Mindset (I am learning and I might not know it yet, but I
will get there)
Challenge (something that is difficult)
Obstacle (something that is in the way, “I can’t solve the
problem because I don’t know how!”)
Grit (working towards a goal and not giving up, even
when it’s hard and you feel like giving up)
Gratitude (being grateful for the good things in life)
Homework Activities
Monday: Choose
two of the words and write a
sentence for each one. The sentence can include the word, or just be about the
word.
Tuesday: Choose
two of the words and draw a picture
for each one that shows what it means.
Wednesday: Practise
gratitude. Write down 3 things that
you are grateful for.
Thursday: Choose
one of the words that you can make a
connection to. Write about your connection. (For
example- I might choose ‘challenge’ and write about a time I faced a challenge,
or I might write about ‘growth mindset’ and explain how having a growth mindset
has helped me)
Please bring your spelling books back to school on
Friday.
