Math Update

We have been learning about measuring mass this week. Our learning in this topic began with using words like heavy, heaviest, heavier, light, lightest, lighter to compare various objects in the classroom. We have also been putting objects in order from heaviest to lightest, and lightest to heaviest.

Next we learned about using the pan balances to find the mass of classroom objects.

At first, we used snap cubes as our non-standard unit. Students found that a pair of scissors has a mass of about 6 snap cubes. Today we learned about grams as a standard unit for measuring mass. We learned that a paperclip has the mass of 1 gram. Students used the pan balances, weights, and non-standard units to measure the mass of classroom objects today. We will continue to estimate and measure mass tomorrow, and Friday.
